Men Out Swim Kentucky on Senior Day

Books and Basketball
Saturday afternoon the women's basketball team faces another top 25 team when they travel to South Bend. Notre Dame is ranked as high as #13 in one poll. Taking on top ranked opponents is only half of the battle these players encounter each and every day. Remember, they are students as well as athletes. David Harding found out that the women's basketball team has quite a juggling act between the basketball and the books. One of our Own is Recognized
Each month the College Of Applied Sciences chooses an athlete to recognize as their "Scholar Athlete of the Month". The January recipient of this award is a former member of our class and a reporter you saw last quarter here on Bearcat Sorts page.com, Nick Saul. Nick is a junior in Electronic Media and a member of the swim team. During the fall quarter Nick was also recognized by the athletic department for having the highest GPA on the men's swim team.Double Header

It will be a busy weekend for the UC swim team. Friday they travel up I-75 to swim against Wright State before returning home Saturday to take on Kentucky. Aside from the competition of the dual meets this is the last competition the teams will see before the Big East meet in the middle of February. The fact that Friday's meet is on the road throws an extra wrinkle into the weekend but, the back to back meets will help the swimmers prepare for the the conference meet where they will be required to swim on consecutive days. Saturdays meet against Kentucky will be on campus at the Keating Aquatic Center, a nice escape from the winter wonderland that has invaded the tri-state this week.

UC Delivers in Big Game
The UC men's basketball team faced a tough conference opponent on Wednesday night, when the # 23 Georgetown Hoyas visited Fifth Third Arena. As the scoreboard hit zeros, Cincinnati came out on top and defeated it's first ranked opponent of the season 65-57. Deonta Vaughn had another big game as he put up 20 points and added 3 steals. Mike Williams played a solid game with 12 points, and freshman Dion Dixon scored 10 points as well. This game was very close showing many lead changes until the Bearcats made a run in the second half and never lost the lead after that. This win improves Cincinnati's record to 14-7 overall and 4-4 in the Big East. Catch the Bearcats in action next time they play, this Sunday, Feb. 1st when they face #21 Villanova. That game will be televised on the Big East Network. Reported by John Staugler

Senior Bowl, Quick Look
The North side lost the Senior Bowl Saturday in Mobile. It was shown on the NFL Network, not sure how many got to see it. Here is some quick info on the game. It looks like Kevin Huber punted the ball well. His long was 61 yards, that was his first of the game. Connor Barwin had one unassisted tackle. On the drive where the South went up 14-3 Connor stopped a 2nd and goal attempt on the 1 yard line. DeAngelo Smith returned 2 punts with a long return of 16 yards toward the end of the first half. Bearcat Sports Page.com will try to have some video up later today.

Bearcats Beat UCONN, in 2nd Half
#1 Comes To Town

Saturday night the best women's college basketball team in America will be playing at Fifth Third Arena against the UC Bearcats. The UCONN Huskies are undefeated and ranked #1 in every poll. Bearcat Sports Page.com stopped by practice Thursday to talk to Coach Hall and the players about their up coming contest. We got there for the end of practice and got to hear Coach Hall and his staff address the team. The message was clear, stay positive and use this game to get better for the rest of the year. The seasons goals are a much bigger picture than just one game.

Barwin Spotlight On NFL Network Coverage
In a video report filed Wednesday at the Senior Bowl, the NFL Network team they selected UC's Connor Barwin as the "#1 slash player". Each commentator picked a player that stood out, one offense, one defense....and then they talked about Connor and how he practiced on both sides of the ball. Click here for the link. It's on the Bengals web site. Good publicity for Barwin and the Bearcats.Local Boy Does Good, Real Good
Last week former UC baseball star Kevin Youkilis officially became a big time major league star. He was rewarded for his outstanding performance with a 4 year $41 million dollar contract by the Boston Red Sox. Last year Youkilis finished third in the leagues MVP balloting. Youkilis batted .312 with 28 home runs and 115 RBI's in 2008. These numbers earned him the Hank Arron Award as the American Leagues best offensive player. It wasn't long ago that he was here in Clifton living on a college kids budget. His former head coach Brian Cleary could not be prouder the Cincinnati native. Wednesday, January 21, 2009

See What's Going On at Senior Week
Through out the day we have been getting updates on how the Bearcats are doing at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Al. Now it's time to show you what's going on. Here is some video from today's practice and some comments from a couple of Bearcat Seniors.
Bearcat Sports Page.com is one of the few places you will find complete coverage like this. We want to thank Randy Patrick, the sports director at WKRG for his help today getting us video of the Bearcats in action and doing the interviews. Ironically, Randy went to McNicolas High School and was more than happy to talk with fellow Rocket Kevin Huber. It turns out they know some of the same people.....in Cincinnati, imagine that. We can't thank Randy enough and hopefully he will be able to send us more as the week of practice continues on. Randy is an experienced sportscaster, to get his help on a project like this is tremendous. Thanks again Randy. To find out more about Randy: Click Here.
Mickens Update: Sore Knee
Defensive back Mike Mickens was sent home from the Senior Bowl Tuesday after practice due to injury. No details were given at first. Bearcat Sports Page.com has received work from a Senior Bowl official that it is "inflammation of knee". Speculation would say that it is probably the knee that was operated on late in the season. This should not be a long term problem and Mickens should be ready to go for the NFL combines in May as well as "pro day" on campus.
Senior Bowl Update: Mickens Leaves

Bearcat defensive back Mike Mickens has left the Senior Bowl with an injury. Due to privacy laws nothing about the injury can be disclosed, Senior Bowl official Kevin McDermond would only state that he was being sent home Tuesday. Mickens did have knee surgery toward the end of the season but was back in time for the Orange Bowl.

Another Bearcat Becomes NFL Boss
After his Baltimore Ravens were eliminated from the NFL Playoffs Sunday, Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan was named the head coach of the New York Jets. Ryan spent time in Clifton under Rick Minter as his defensive coordinator. Ryan becomes the third former Bearcat assistant coach to be named an NFL head coach. He joins the man he just left, Baltimore's John Harbaugh and Super Bowl Bound Mike Tomlin. Congratulations to Coach Ryan. Along with his ties to UC, Rex is also the son former NFL head Coach Buddy Ryan.
National Champs Again
You want a winner in Clifton? You got one! The UC dance team has won it's 4th national title in the past 6 years. This past weekend they were in Orlando trying to recapture the title they won in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Congratulations to the dance team for once again winning the Division 1 Hip Hop national championship. For more details, click here.

From Clifton to Super Bowl

There will be a former Bearcat coach leading a team into Tampa for the Super Bowl in two weeks. Mike Tomlin, who spent time in Clifton under Rick Minter, will be trying to bring another Super Bowl title back to the Steel City. Sunday night Tomlin and his Steelers defeated the Baltimore Ravens for the third time this season. The Ravens contained it's fair share of Bearcats, including head coach John Harbaugh who also was part of Rick Minters staff along with his defensive coordinator, Rex Ryan. On the field two Bearcats played in the AFC title game, Haruki Nakamura for the Ravens and Andre Frazier for the Steelers. Nakamu came close to getting a sack in the first half when he was in on a blitz package. Along with Tomlin and Frazier, special teams coach Amos Jones was also an assistant in Clifton under Minter is making the trip to Tampa February 1st with the Steelers.
Celek Has Record Day in Loss
It may not feel like it today, but Brent Celek had a great day Sunday. One of his best as a professional football player. The former Bearcat caught 10 passes for 83 yards, including 2 touchdowns in the NFC Championship game. The 10 catches set a new Philadelphia post season record.Sunday, January 18, 2009

Ugly Wins Count Too
Mick Cronin says it every week, "defense puts you in the position to win games". He also says, " you have to win ugly sometimes to win in the Big East Conference". Both were true today. In the first half a 23-2 run put the Bercats in a position to win. Did they have trouble toward the end, yes. But... that defensive stand that helped build the first half lead was the difference. At the end of the game it was "ugly", but an "ugly win" always beats an "ugly loss". Deonta Vaughn certainly helped the cause with 5 three pointers in the first half during that run. From Chicago the team flys to Providence for their game against the Friars Monday night. Big road win 59-55. Once again holding an opponent under 60 points.
Underwood In Shrine Bowl Saturday
Saturday afternoon on ESPN 2 Bearcat fans can see the first of 6 different UC players playing in a post season all star game. Brandon Underwood was selected to play on the East squad in the East West Shrine Bowl. As mentioned earlier UC has 6 "all stars". This put them up with USC and LSU for teams that have the largest number of seniors in post season all star bowls. Underwood can be seen Saturday afternoon when the Shrine Bowl kicks off in Houston at 3:00 on ESPN2. The other 5 Bearcats will be in the Senior Bowl next Saturday in Mobile, Alabama. Bearcat Sports Page.com caught up with Connor Barwin yesterday in the weight room getting ready for next weeks game, we will have that interview later next week.

Mardy is Staying
The University of Cincinnati announced today that wide receiver Mardy Gilyard will be returning next season for his senior year. Mardy was a key piece to the success the offense had during this past season. The team, the school, and the community he does so much volunteer work with are all better off with his decision to return.

Passing Of A Legend
It's a sad night for the University of Cincinnati family. A member of the family has passed away, Jim Kelly Sr. is gone. Mr. Kelly passed away earlier this afternoon at the age of 81. To try and list all of his accomplishments at UC would take far more space than we could ever find. He was everything at UC, but most of all he was a friend. Former Bearcat football players we ran into at the Orange Bowl were sad that "Coach Kelly" couldn't make the trip, but were happy that he was able to enjoy this historical moment. The list of friends and family left behind may be the only list that would take up more space than the list of his accomplishments. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Kelly family, and his UC family. For a complete perspective on Mr. Kelly's career at UC visit: gobearcats.com

Former Bearcat Coach In Super Bowl
Oh So Close to 3 an O
"A"For Effort
Saturday afternoon the Bearcats went up against one of the best teams in the country and held their own in a loosing effort, 72-81. Unlike previous games against top 25 competition, this time they were "competitive". Freshman forward Yancy Gates did a great job against future NBA lottery pick Hasheem Thabeet. Earlier this week Coach Mick Cronin pointed out that this "Final Four Caliber" UCONN team struggled just two seasons ago going 6-10 in the Big East and 17-14 overall. This is the same team, the only difference is that the 8 freshmen and 5 sophomores are now Seniors and Juniors.Saturday, January 10, 2009
NFL Bearcats Playing Today

The NFL playoffs resume this afternoon with good representation from the University of Cincinnati. The afternoon game involves the Baltimore Ravens visiting the Tennessee Titans.Tremendous Turn Around

This time last year the Bearcats had just won their first Big East game of the season by upsetting Georgetown and handing Coach J. Kelly Hall his 300th career win. From that point the Cats would only win one more conference game in what would be a long season. Injured players, new coach, young players....what a difference a year makes.
Saturdays game against Syracuse is part of a double header with the men's team. The women's game starts at 7:30 and is free for anyone that went to the men's game against UCONN earlier in the afternoon. For those unable to make it to Fifth Third Arena the game will be carried on Fox Sports Network (FSN Ch #43 on Time Warner Cable). Game time is 7:30.
Tall Task: UCONN
Saturday afternoon the Bearcats take on one of the best teams in the country when UCONN pays a visit to Fifth Third Arena, and that means going up against one of the best big men in the country. Hasheem Thabeet and his 7'3 frame will be clogging the lane at both ends of the court. Friday, January 9, 2009

Urban Praises UC
Thursday night a UC alum and former Bearcat, will be playing for another national championship. Of course we are talking about Florida Head Coach Urban Meyer (class of '86). Ironically the game will be played at Dolphin Stadium, the same place UC was playing the Orange Bowl one week ago. Palestra.net, a website of college reporters, has people in Miami covering both the Orange Bowl and the BCS Championship. Reporter Ryan Cost was on the ball enough to ask the Florida Head Coach his thoughts on his alma mater being in a BCS game.Ladies First?
Don't look now but your women's basketball team is tied for first place in the Big East. Okay, the season is young...but they are 2-0. Wednesday night they notched win #2 ( 12-3 overall) at West Virginia by a score of 61-55. Kahla Roudenbush ( Jr- Secondary Education) dropped in 24 points and team mate Jill Stephens (Sr- Audiology) had a double double. The Bearcats begin a 3 game home stand this Saturday against Syracuse. We will have more on this game Friday, but Syracuse upset #17 Rutgers earlier this week. Game time 7:30. As part of a doubleheader with the men ( UCONN at 4:30) you can stay and watch the women's game FREE.

This Team Needs "Barwin-Attude"!!!!
After watching the game Wednesday night against Providence this team needs a spark. They need a guy that comes in and scraps and fights. They need a guy that won't back down and is willing to fight for every ball. They need Connor Barwin. Okay it ain't gonna happen....but what if. Last years seniors weren't the best players in America but they were hard fighting and tough. John Williamson, Marcus Sikes, Jamual Warren....where are they now? Where is that "Bearcat Attitude". Remember when Brad Jackson came in from the football team to help and just tackled the first guy he saw in his first game? That's what this team needs. Apparently they have the talent...they just need that swagger that this program has always had. Even when they lacked talent the other team knew they were in for a fight.
Women On A Roll
The UC women's basketball team takes their show on the road Wednesday night to West Virginia in search of their second conference win in as many tries. Last weekend the Cats knocked off Villanova for their 10th win of the year. This will only be the 4th road game for Coach Halls squad, with a win at Dayton and losses at Kentucky and Michigan.Providence Preview
Game time is at 7:00.

A New 6'11 Bearcat
Tuesday afternoon before practice an unfamiliar "tall" young man was taking jump shots in Bearcat practice gear. Turns out it was UC's newest student and Mick Cronins newest Bearcat, Ibrahima Thomas is transferring in from Oklahoma State. Last year as a freshman Thomas started 27 games for the Cowboys. At the end of the year he scored 19 points against Texas in the Big 12 Conference quarter finals. He enrolled in classes today and will be eligible to play at the beginning of Winter Quarter next year.Team Meeting Called By Players
The meeting was called by the team leaders, both of them. With such a young team Deonta Vaughn and Mike Williams are the "veteran leaders". Having so much inexperience and so few leaders makes this a learning experience for every one.
Wednesday night will be a huge test for this team. How will they respond after two bad road losses? Are they young enough to shake it off and move on with a victory? The leadership taken by Vaughn and Williams was a "must" if this team is to get through this. The attitude is that of resilience not dispare. This team is focused on bouncing back, not giving up. A nice supportive crowd Wednesday would certainly help the cause.

Barwin, Underwood Added to East Squad
Two more Bearcats were added to the roster for the East West Shrine Bowl. This is one of the oldest and most respected post season bowls. The rosters are made up of outstanding senior talent from all over the country. Trevor Canfield was named to the East roster earlier, and his team mates Connor Barwin and Brandon Underwood were added this week. Proceeds from the game go the the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Being selected for this All Star Bowl has been an honor for many years. For other roster additions this please click here. The game is on January 17 and will air on ESPN2 at 4:00.

Need More Than 50
Last week when the Bearcats dropped a big game at Memphis they scored only 45 points, in today's loss at Marquette they scored only 50. The fact that UC lost at Marquette, or for that matter at Memphis, is not unexpected. It's how they lost. Today they shot only 32% from the field and 16% from 3 point, while Marquette was 54% from the field and 60% from 3 point. Sunday it was the three pointer that hurt them....on both sides. At Memphis UC shot 33% from the field and 20% from 3, while Memphis was 40% from the field and just 16% from 3. At Memphis, 20 turnovers for the Cats hurt them quite a bit.
